A Dad and His Son – and Their Camaros

David and Dawson Maples Share their Camaro Journey to America’s Car-Mart


Like father, like son.

David Maples owns a 2019 Camaro. His son, Dawson, is the proud owner of a 2015 Camaro, thanks to America’s Car-Mart of Benton, Arkansas.

Growing up, David worked on Camaros with his dad. He fondly remembers the 1971 split bumper Camaro they rebuilt together. His first car was a Z28 Chevy Camaro that his dad gave to him when he was 16. “I’ve had all the body styles. Camaros are generational,” smiles David.

Fast forward to today, and David continues the tradition of working on Camaros with his two sons, Dawson and Alex. “We are always restoring a Camaro,” says Dawson, while adding the new [Camaro] body styles hold a fascination for him.

When it was time for 20-year-old Dawson to get a new vehicle, it had to be a Camaro. They went on a journey to find one, visiting several dealerships. However, at one dealership that did have a Camaro, the service was lackluster. After several days of not receiving answers to their questions, they weren’t feeling the love.

That’s when, lo and behold, they spotted a red Camaro at Car-Mart.

So, it was off to Car-Mart. That Camaro was prepped, ready for sale, and just waiting for Dawson!

It was Dawson’s first time purchasing a car on his own at a car dealership, so David accompanied him and co-signed on the vehicle. “I’m grateful my dad helped me out,” says Dawson. “This will help buying the next vehicle a little easier.”

“It made me feel great to help out my son,” David says. “Too many times when our kids turn 18, we let them get out on their own. But as parents, we still need to be there for them, especially in their first car-buying experience. They don’t know what to expect or how to negotiate. I know what it’s supposed to look like. And now I trust Dawson to make payments on his own.”

An easy, stress-free car-buying process leads to high fives – and his own Camaro!

“When I walked onto the Car-Mart lot, they greeted me. They provided me with details on the car,” Dawson recalls. “They actually seemed like they wanted to sell a car. They looked professional. The professionalism at Car-Mart is over the top.”

Dawson says the process was ‘super easy and super helpful.’ “They answered my every question,” he continues. “Within a couple hours, we were ready to go. I give them 10 out of 10.”

David, owner of The Maples Insurance Agency in Benton, adds that the Car-Mart team treated Dawson with respect, compared to the other dealership. “They didn’t think a 20-year-old could afford a car. He’s got the buying power. We want to be treated fairly. They dismissed Dawson until I walked on the lot with him, and it was a different story,” says David, who purchased his first vehicle at the Benton Car-Mart in 1997 – a red, 1991 Chevy S-10. “I paid $4,999 for it. I was 18 years old,” smiles David. Since that time, he’s purchased four vehicles from Car-Mart.

Dawson purchased the optional service contract for peace of mind. “It makes me feel good to know I have several services. A little bit less stress,” he says. “I don’t have to look at spending money on an oil change when money may be a little tight.”

When the Car-Mart sales associate handed Dawson the keys to his Camaro, it was high five’s all around. “It was a happy experience,” smiles Dawson, who now has his own Camaro.

“Dawson got his first car. He has a service contract, and he’ll be able to stay on the road. He’ll be able to go to work, family functions, and so much more,” says David.

“The experience was great,” Dawson concludes. “We bought at Car-Mart because it was easy. It was so smooth. No stress. Super simple. We’re good to go!”

And when the time is right for 17-year-old Alex to have a Camaro, we’re hoping America’s Car-Mart has just the Camaro for him!
